Melourne Gaol

Nov. 5 – a.m.

There was a very thorough bus tour of Melbourne (remember to read that as Melbin) today. We stopped at the Old Melboune Gaol (pronounced as jail). As horrible as the conditions seem to us today, there were people that would commit crimes just to be in jail over the winter, so they would have food and shelter. Never mind that they were only given 2 blankets, a straw pallat and a set of clothes to wear. NO heat of any kind. We find the conditions appalling, but people at the time thought the convicts were being coddled.
